The first hour is quite easy today, on the flat valley floor slowly rising up to the small village of Dughla (90 mins – 2 hrs). The ascent towards Everest Base Camp continues through alpine meadows and summer yak pastures towards the end of the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier.

Next is a trek up the front of the glacier, a steep, but short section (~45 mins).  At the top is a group of moving memorials to climbers who have lost their lives in this area.

After a rest it is 1-2 hours to Lobouche. 5 – 6 hrs.

The higher altitude can make today’s trek challenging.  The route follows the Khumbu Glacier with its amazing 15m (49ft)-high walls of ice, a feature unique to Himalayan glaciers.

The center of Base Camp is not marked, since it tends to move depending on where the climbers camp during the main climbing season,  but it is marked with a cairn, prayer flags, and a sign.

Here you can take a great close-up look the Khumbu ice field before heading back to Gorek Shep for dinner and bed.
